Researchers Alejandro Parra and Carlos Argibay just completed a study looking at the ancient divisions of temperament (AKA inherited emotional tendency) by element: Phlegmatic, Sanguine, Melancholic, and Choleric. Their research question was whether or not these temperament styles related to different types of paranormal experiences. These descriptions of human tendencies were one of the earliest divisions of personality, and have shaped modern theories of temperament even today.
Interpreting these terms may be difficult. So for the average reader, sanguine represents an optimistic leader type personality. Choleric is known for bad temper and irritability. Melancholic is characterized as analytical and quiet. Finally, a Phlegmatic person is known for relaxed and peaceful behaviors.
These researchers found a significant (AKA genuine difference in frequency of accounts) between these four Temperaments. Choleric temperaments were associated with greater frequency of out-of-body experiences, ESP in dreams, Auras, Deja-vu, and the reported amount of paranormal experiences. Sanguine groups reported more telepathy experiences. Finally, Melancholic individuals reported significantly more sensing of presences.
Take home message? Irritable and cranky people are more prone to paranormal experiences, at least according to this study.
