POLTERGEIST WEDNESDAY: Iceland Farms and Moving Furniture

ost-places-1658268__180May 23rd, 1964: Sauar, Iceland. William Roll left the Parapsychological Convention in Oxford to visit a farm of strange disturbances. At the time, the Icelandic Society for Psychical Research had already been to the farm, where the inhabitants reported the kitchen table moving, a cupboard had fallen over several times and crockery had been broken. The inhabitants, an older couple had reported that the incidents had started with a sixty-pound table moved three feet into their bedroom.  The very next day, according to the occupants, and not only a chair, but multiple cups, dishes, and even knives had been scattered and broken!

landscape-1619283__340Having personally visited the farm, but not witnessing any phenomena, Roll had to rely on second hand accounts. Additional reported incidents included the dogs of the farm refusing to enter the house, the daughter of the couple hearing a strong wind that shook the actual house, and the kitchen table moving on its own on two separate occasions.

eitg86zlptRoll, who believes that poltergeist activity is unconscious psychic manifestation, noticed that the Mother who lived on the farm wanted to move, whereas the father did not. A period where the mother went to the hospital resulted in all activity ceasing until her return. Once the husband relented to sell the farm, all activity in the home and farm had ceased.

POLTERGEIST MONDAY: Strange Lights in an Empty House

spookyhouseStrange lights in windows of a nondescript house in North Carolina? An unusual start to a poltergeist case to be sure. Yet, with the entire family out of the house, all sides watched, and no lights, a series of neon like flashes were seen through the windows. Paranormal or prank? William Roll was willing to investigate and find out.

images-4According to police, the lights were faster than photo flashbulb lights and often stronger than ordinary lights. The lights were thought to surround the daughter of the family, 19-year-old Frances. Consulting with engineers from UNC, the house was searched for lighting remote controls, but nothing was found. No smells or chemical burns were present in the home either. For 1962, there were little other explanations for technological lights.

download-1Despite multiple calls to the police, several instances of lights rapidly flashing continued to occur in rooms that were demonstrably empty. Although not witnessed, Frances claimed that the light “hit her car” at one point while pulling out. Despite days of investigation and stake outs by multiple police, several professors and experts, electricians, and a running theory of a stalker/prowler, the lights were never explained.

Does A Near Death Experience Make You More Spiritual?

yosemite-1590013__340Khanna and Greyson (2014) conducted a study to determine if those that have been through a near-death experience had an increase in spirituality on a daily basis. Some people have heard their medical staff pronounce them as dead, and then they return to their bodies. The feeling of walking into a light has been described after the patient has returned and become conscious once again. They also reported that they felt as if they were dead for a period of time. People have talked about them leaving their bodies, the feeling of complete and utter calmness, and a bright white light.

4680251952_a1f8dd22fe_bThe study consisted of questionnaires about spiritual experience prior to their NDE and compared them to after the NDE to determine if there was an increase or decrease in the person’s daily spiritual experience. The scores on spirituality AFTER an NDE was calculated for people who had an NDE compared to those that had not ever experienced an NDE. Those that had an NDE scored higher in daily spirituality than those people who had not ever had an NDE.

324228045_fc9c736bb1_bThose people that had an NDE reported that after the event they had major life changes not only in spirituality but also in tolerability of others, greater confidence in themselves, and a  better appreciation for life. They also report a renewed sense of purpose, a decrease in the wanting of materialistic possessions, a higher sense of spirituality, increase in love and understanding as well as a greatly reduced fear of death. People who have reported an NDE, tend to change their life and their daily spiritual experiences due to that experience.

How People Change After a Near Death Experience

arch-896900__340Klemenc-Ketis (2011) conducted a study to determine if life changes in cardiac arrest patients that experienced a near death experience would continue after the NDE.  Some patients experience post-traumatic stress disorder after having a cardiac arrest, and that makes their life change as well. They become more aware of people in their lives, keep close tabs on their health, and more attentive to their needs as well as the needs of those around them.

tarantula-nebula-1245253__340They found that people that had cardiac arrest with a NDE made more life changes in certain aspects of their life. In their social life NDE patients showed more empathy, more awareness to others around them, and better understanding of other people, compared to those that had a cardiac arrest without an NDE. In their spirituality, those that had  an NDE increased in their beliefs and looking for more spiritual growth compared to those that did not have an NDE. Those that had an NDE also no longer feared death and believed more in an afterlife then before their NDE.

download-2Six months later, researchers found that those that had just experienced a cardiac arrest did not have major life changes compared to those that did have an NDE. Those that only has a cardiac arrest only had changed parts in their life that dealt with their health. Thus, the research concludes that NDE’s, factual or not, create persistent changes in people’s lives.

Extraversion and The Sun Sign

downloadJ. F. van Rooij, M. A. Brak, and J.F Commandeur (1988) examined the relationship between the Astrological Sun Sign and extraversion by replicating a study done in 1978 by Mayo, White, and Eysenck. A great amount of research has attempted to replicate a previous study to try and get similar findings. A previous study found that individuals whose zodiac signs were Aries, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius, and Aquarius were more prone to be extroverted. The Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces signs tend to be more introverted.

xzodiacsigndateszodiacmeanings-jpg-pagespeed-ic-yrihssiogvThese researchers decided to continue the research around relationships between the Sun Sign and extraversion. The current study examined previous data that had been collected over a 5 year period, that was not originally focused around astrology. Thus, people could not provide answers based in astrology, tainting the results.

flyer-4Three factors were tested for higher rates of extraversion in the study. These factors were gender differences, odd and even zodiac signs and the astrological sun sign. Researchers found that there were no gender differences nor did the zodiac positions in regards to the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, and Venus had any effect on levels of extraversion.

Do you fall in the realm of extraversion and introversion, based on your zodiac sign and sun sign position? This research suggests not.

PARANORMAL FACTS NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

abandonedhouseWe hope you enjoyed our first month of Paranormal Facts! As a community service, the people at the Institute for the Study of Religious and Anomalous Experience intend to keep it up. In fact, you can count on Paranormal Facts for the foreseeable future, or until we run out of parapsychology and related science to report. At our current pace, more research gets published quicker than we could ever report it.

4khukhv218So if you like what we’re doing, or enjoy reading Paranormal Facts, consider spreading the word. If you’re feeling generous, consider donating. This is just one of several projects on paranormal phenomena that were trying to provide. For instance, in the spring, we will be offering a free on-line college level parapsychology class for anyone and everyone. We’ll keep you posted.

witchs-house-1781748If you’re asking why we do it, the answer is simple. We really believe that most people can’t get access to good research and science on paranormal activity. There is a lot of good information out there, but it’s not easy to get to, and funding for research is almost impossible. So, we will keep researching, keep posting Paranormal Facts, and keep writing until people do know where to go. Let us know what you need, and support us if you can.

We can’t cure diseases, and we can’t save all the animals, but we can offer quality research and information on paranormal events to the public.

P.S. It’s getting to be that season, so go support a Parapsychologist. We need the support.

How Does Meditation Influence Creativity?

imagesThere have been quite a few studies conducted that have linked meditation and creativity. It has been suggested meditation heightens creativity. Meditation impacts how we manage our attention. The current study aims to explore how the various aspects of meditation style affect creativity and attention.

stones-840175__180The two meditation styles used in this study are mindfulness meditation and concentrative meditation. In mindfulness meditation practitioners are instructed to be mindful of their environment, their breath, and their emotions. Those practicing in this form of meditation are given more freedom with their thoughts than those who are practicing concentrative meditation. Those who are engaging in concentrative meditation are instructed to concentrate on one thing, and they are instructed to not deter from that.

wikileaks-confirms-etIt was found that participants were more creative after the meditation session, with an average of two more ideas after meditation. However, the results showed that participants in the concentrative meditation group scored higher in cognitive flexibility. This is the ability to overcome fixed thought patterns. This is thought to be a key element in creativity. There was no significant difference between pre and post-meditation for the mindfulness meditation group in terms of cognitive flexibility.

What Components of Personality Correlate to Belief in the Paranormal?

pexels-photo-38990There is much literature to support the statement that there are two tendencies, openness to experience and sensation seeking, that are predictors of belief in the paranormal. However,  the exact relationship between the three is unclear. The current aims to pinpoint how they relate. To accomplish that both openness to experience and sensation seeking are broken down into measurable subcategories. A measurement packet was crafted. The packet contained Zuckerman’s Sensation Seeking Scale, the Analogous Experience Inventory, a socio-demographic sheet, and the NEO-PI-R which not only measures the five major personality domains but also looks at six facets of each domain.

spookyroomThe results supported that both openness to experience and sensation seeking related with the belief in Paranormal Phenomena. The results also confirmed that openness to experience relates more strongly to the belief in Paranormal Phenomena than Sensation Seeking. All facets of openness to experience correlated but fantasy, actions, and values were the strongest predictors. Sensation Seeking was broken down into four categories; Thrill and Adventure Seeking, Experience Seeking, Disinhibition Seeking, and Boredom Susceptibility. The only Sensation seeking subscale that did not positively correlate with paranormal belief was Thrill and Adventure Seeking.
